Jim Oakley has had two distinct and distinguished careers. Raised in Bibb County, Alabama, Oakley worked in the family business, the Centreville Press, a weekly, from the time he was a boy, at first sweeping the floors and delivering the papers. In 1984, Oakley sold the paper, intending to retire, but was called almost immediately by UA Dean Ed Mullins to teach journalism.

Harvill served as CEO of Strong Automotive Merchandising from 1992 until his retirement in 2010. By that time the company, which was renamed the Intermark Group, had become the largest advertising agency in Alabama and one of the largest in the southeast with over 160 employees in three states serving clients as diverse as Toyota Motors, Mohawk Carpets and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.SHOW ME NOW

During the 2012-13 academic year, The University of Alabama celebrated 175 years of engineering education. In 1837, The University of Alabama Board of Trustees told the faculty that “the present state of our country calls for instruction in (engineering) from our university” making UA one of the first five institutions in the country to teach engineering.SHOW ME NOW
